I've been very, very fortunate through personal travel and a humanitarian career working with refugees and victims of disasters and conflicts, to see our world from a variety of angles. I've stood atop the majestic Himalayas in Nepal and gazed across the breathtaking "roof of the world," but also stared, with a deep inner feeling of disgust and rage, at disjointed skeletons of elderly men and young boys in a vast uncovered shallow grave in Bosnia & Hercegovina. And while I've seen the weather-beaten, architectural, beauty of colonial Spanish towns in Mexico, I have also witnessed families and their livestock struggling to survive the unrelenting grip of drought in Northern Kenya.
It was as a teenager that my appreciation began for the power of photography and it was strong enough for me to dedicate part of my undergraduate experience to the study of Visual Arts. But it really wasn't until I took advantage of the great educator that is travel itself, that I understood what the wider world presented and the desire to have my camera in my hand grew.
Putting this website together was a learning experience. The process of selecting and categorizing images shot over many years prompted much introspection. Why do I shoot what I shoot; compose as I compose? Do I capture an image or does the image capture me? At the end of the day I am drawn to social storytelling of the lives of the distinct people I have encountered, even if momentarily, and the historical and social aspects of the unique cities and towns in which I have lived, worked or visited. I know how fortunate I have been to see what I have seen and this website allows me the unique opportunity to share these "Lifescapes" and in my own way help strengthen the connective tissue between us all no matter which part of the world we call home.
